Overview
The most popular Morocco desert tour: a 3-day journey from Marrakech to Fes across the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou and the golden dunes of Merzouga, with a camel trek and a night in a Sahara camp.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades
Your unforgettable Marrakech to Fes desert tour begins with a private pick-up from your riad, heading south over the legendary Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) with sweeping views of the snow-capped High Atlas Mountains. You stop at the UNESCO World Heritage kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou — the breathtaking film set for Gladiator, Game of Thrones and countless blockbusters — then continue along the famous Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the fragrant Valley of the Roses to the dramatic Dades gorges for the night.
Day 2: Dades → Todra Gorge → Merzouga
This morning you wind through the spectacular Todra Gorge, where sheer red cliffs rise 300 metres above a crystal-clear river. In the afternoon you reach Merzouga and the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, where a camel caravan carries you over the sand to a magical Sahara sunset and an unforgettable night in a comfortable Berber desert camp — with a home-cooked tagine, drumming around the fire and a sky ablaze with stars.
Day 3: Merzouga → Midelt → Ifrane → Fes
Wake early for a truly breathtaking sunrise over the Sahara dunes, then journey north through the date-palm oasis of Rissani, alpine Ifrane and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas — home to playful wild Barbary monkeys — before arriving in the imperial city of Fes, the spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco.
