Morocco Sahara Desert Tour Guide: Merzouga, Erg Chebbi & Desert Camps

Merzouga vs Zagora: which dunes?

For the classic Sahara postcard — towering golden dunes — head to Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. The dunes rise up to 150 metres and are unbeatable at sunrise. Zagora and Erg Chigaga are closer to Marrakech but flatter; choose Merzouga if you can spare the extra day.

How many days do you need?

From Marrakech, a proper desert trip needs at least 3 days and 2 nights. From Fes, 2 to 3 days works well. Anything shorter means too many hours in the car. Our most popular routes combine the desert with the Todra Gorge, Aït Ben Haddou and the Atlas Mountains.

A night in a desert camp

After a camel trek over the dunes at sunset, you reach camp for a home-cooked tagine, Berber drumming around the fire and a sky full of stars. Camps range from standard to luxury tents with real beds and private bathrooms — we match the camp to your budget.

Camel trek or 4x4?

Both are included on most tours. The camel trek is short (about an hour) and iconic; if you prefer, a 4x4 can take you straight to camp. Let us know and we adapt.

What to pack

Layers for cold desert nights, a scarf for the wind and sand, sunscreen, and a small day bag — your main luggage stays in the vehicle.
